Basket Maker's Willow

Bundles of Buff, Brown, or Steamed Willow usually available in 6ft, 5ft, 4ft and 3ft lengths. A bundle contains between 700 and 1500 rods (longer and thicker willow = fewer rods).

Buff Willow

Buff Willow is boiled and stripped of it's bark, leaving a buff (orange brown) colour. It is suitable for indoor use such as baskets and furniture as it is strong and will not shrink. 2 hours soaking is required.

Buff Willow is not suitable for outdoor use as it will perish quickly without bark for protection.

Brown or Steamed Sticks

Brown Willow is dried green willow and is olive green in colour. The bark remains in place providing protection against the elements, making it ideal for outdoor structures.

Brown Willow can also be used to add colour to a basket made primarily from white or buff. Suitable for inside/outside use and requires 5 - 7 days soaking.

Brown Willow is approximately 1-2cm thick. 1m & 0.75m suitable for border uprights. 1.8m suitable for climbers.

Steamed Sticks

Steamed sticks are green or brown willow which is steamed for two hours, to give dark brown colour. The bark remains on, protecting the willow from the elements making it ideal for use on outdoor structures.

White Willow

White willow is freshly cut and left to stand in water until sap rises (about 3 months until early spring). It is stripped without boiling to leave white colour. It is used mainly for traditionally white baskets - washing baskets, bakers' baskets and babies cribs. Also used to give colour contrast. It is generally in short supply and is not suitable for outdoor use.
