Artists' Charcoal

For over thirty years artist charcoal has been made here from willow grown by the Coate family. Coates willow charcoal is now well known across the globe and is commended for its softness and deep black lines.

The willow plant used for making this artist charcoal grows very quickly taking only one growing season to be ready for use. The process of turning the willow plant into fine charcoal sticks takes three days.
